Maintaining dance shoes: how to keep your shoes in top shape

You should look after your dance shoes, because as a passionate dancer, your dance shoes will accompany you through every turn, every step and hopefully many unforgettable nights. To keep it that way, cleaning and caring for your shoes is an absolute must! Find out what you need to know about the right way to handle them here. Whether you want to clean your dance shoes, roughen the sole, clean satin dance shoes or clean the sole of your dance shoes - here you will find practical, tried-and-tested tips straight from our Dancing Queens Community.

Why should you care for your dance shoes regularly?

Dance shoes should be maintained regularly because dirt, moisture and abrasion impair their functionality and lifespan. Well-maintained shoes offer better traction, increase safety when dancing and prevent injuries. Your dance shoes are not a fashion gimmick - they are your most important tool when dancing. They are your "sports equipment", as we say at Dancing Queens say. And as with any piece of sports equipment, it needs to be well looked after in order to function optimally.

All the advantages of well-maintained dance shoes at a glance

  • Optimum traction through clean soles
  • More stability for fast movements
  • Hygiene by avoiding the formation of odors
  • Longer service life of the material
  • Less risk of injury due to reliable hold

Care extends the life of your dance shoes

If you look after your dance shoes properly, they will last longer, protect your joints and provide better traction. Otherwise, the soles will lose their grip over time, the upper material will become dirty or brittle and unpleasant odors will spread if you don't clean and air out your dance shoes regularly.

1. cleaning dance shoes - inside and out

The cleaning tips differ slightly depending on the material of your shoes. Our Dancing Queen shoes are made of high-quality leather, imitation leather, linen or satin.

For leather or imitation leather models:

Simply wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For more shine and suppleness, you can use a neutral leather care product or leather balm - but please use sparingly and without aggressive cleaning agents.

For textiles (e.g. canvas dance sneakers):

Dab with a mild soapy solution, do not rub. Then leave to air dry, but not directly on the radiator.

The following applies to the inside of the shoe:

It is best to air out dance shoes after each use. Never leave them in the bag overnight - this encourages odors and bacteria. An antibacterial shoe spray can keep them fresh. This is particularly helpful if you wear your shoes barefoot.

2. clean satin dance shoes - please use "kid gloves"

Satin looks elegant, but is particularly delicate. That's why the following applies here: only clean selectively and carefully. A lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water and a drop of mild shampoo works best. Do not rub - just dab gently on the stain. Then leave your satin dance shoes to dry well in the air - never on the heater! Heat can loosen the glue and change the shape of the shoe.

3. roughening dance shoes - for perfect grip

Many dance shoes - especially classic models such as our salsa dance shoes, standard dance shoes for men and women, our tango shoes and many more - have a suede sole (rough leather sole). This offers you optimum grip and glide at the same time. Over time, however, it becomes smooth - dust, sweat and contact with the floor smooth out the leather.

What to do? Roughen up your dance shoes!

Use a special brush (e.g. with wire bristles) and always work in one direction. This will "open" the fibers of the sole again and restore the original adhesion.

Tip from usTake a small brush with you to the party or to training. A quick brush move in between makes all the difference.

4. cleaning the sole of dance shoes - depending on the type of sole

With Dancing Queens you will find different types of soles, which also differ in terms of care. If you are unsure which type of sole is installed in your model, take a look at our product page or ask our team via WhatsApp - we can help you personally at any time!

Suede/suede sole
  • - Dry brushing only
  • - No moisture - otherwise it becomes hard and smooth
outdoor sole (e.g. outdoor dance shoes & dance sneakers)
  • - Clean with a damp cloth or brush

5. extra tips from the Dancing Queens Community

  • Let your shoes air out well after every dance - take out your insoles (if you have them) and air them out too.
  • Loosen the lacing - this protects the material when taking off and putting on.
  • Use heel protectors for heels dance shoes - this reduces wear and tear on the heels.
  • Use a shoehorn - it's smart, not old-fashioned. Your shoes will stay beautiful and in shape for much longer.
  • Change the pair regularly - especially if you dance often. Your shoes need a rest!

How do I care for dance sneakers?

Various Sneaker types made of linen or leather can be cleaned with a damp cloth, the sole with a brush. Many models can be washed at 30 °C on a delicate wash program. Replacement laces are recommended.

Care instructions for SMOVE dance sneakers

The SMOVE Dance sneakers for women and men's shoes made of genuine leather or canvas are designed for everyday wear and the dance floor. Thanks to the flexible outdoor sole they are also suitable for outdoor use, for example when traveling or strolling around town.

Cleaning step by step

  • Clean the surface: Gently remove dirt with a damp cloth.
  • Clean the sole: Brush off with a soft brush.
  • Machine wash: If required in the Delicate wash program at 30 °C washable (please note the care label).
  • Drying: Air dry - do not put in the dryer.

Tip: Have spare laces with you Even the strongest laces can break at some point. That's why it's best to always have a few extra laces with you.
